It was such an honor to be a part of this show and have a piece next to my mentor, Dawn Gavin. Curated by another mentor, Sarada Conaway, Drawing School, “is an annual art exhibition featuring mentor and mentee artist pairs from colleges and universities…This year’s focus is drawing… The resulting exhibitions provide a visual record of both art and art instruction.”

In the interviews for the show Sarada asked Dawn and I: “Where can we look to inform our teaching? Have other areas of your life informed your teaching?”

Dawn: “I’m always using sports analogies in class. When I am teaching drawing, I really feel that I am coaching … I would never expect to put on a pair of skates, pick up a hockey stick, and step out onto the ice and play a game. That sports analogy helps students understand that we are doing drills. These things are preparation for a bigger game, and I think that what we are learning in Drawing 1, for example, is core movements.”

Katharine: “My father is a coach. I grew up watching that. A lot of what Dawn did as a teacher reminded me of my father. She rewards, she gives you confidence, but she never makes you feel that [you] are finished.”
